Valentine's Day this year falls on a Friday and just before the schools break up for half-term, which is such great news!
Take a look at four of our favourite red roses for this year's February 14th designs, starting with Red Naomi roses above, with their sweet subtle scent, at Zest Flowers. Plus there's the regular round-up of beautiful seasonal blooms available at Nine Elms, together with foliage, plants and sundries too.
British Flowers
Narcissi by the multiple box and container load can be found this month at Pratley. And the scent when you approach their stand is incredible! Do check out these exquisitely fragrant, dainty British Narcissi Grand Soleil D'Or. You'll also find Paperwhites and Fortune.
Plus they have wraps of British tulips, perfect for hand-tied bouquets, in a range of stunning colours and varieties.
World Flowers
Back to red and pipped to be a popular choice by the traders this year are these Explorer roses from Ecuador, with their deep red, velvety petals. First introduced onto the world market in 2011, you'll find this red rose variety available at several wholesalers, including Bloomfield.
You may be drawn to these large-headed Freedom roses, also from Ecuador, at Zest Flowers?
Or how about this red rose variety called Finally, which has an intense crimson colour that transitions to a darker tone. You may like to take a read of this special report about red roses too for further inspiration.
An alternative to roses are these wonderful deep red almost burgundy fringed tulips at Bloomfield called Beyonce.
Or how about these gorgeous red Anemones? For lots more anemone inspiration, check out this florist's guide to anemones.
Alternatively, there's this fabulous variety of Butterfly Ranunculus called Hades.
At this time of year, DG Wholesale Flowers have an incredible range of Anemones! Ask Trevor, pictured below, or any one of their sales team, if there's a particular colour you're on the look-out for.
And what could be more perfect for a pale pink Valentine's Day bouquet than these Hanoi Cloni Ranunculus, which they also have?
And yes, I couldn't quite believe my eyes either, but DG Wholesale Flowers have a selection of Peonies available, including this fabulous variety called Gardenia.
For beautifully scented spring bouquets, how about Hyacinthus orientalis Blue Star which have densely flowered spikes of soft blue flowers with slightly paler edges?
Have you come across this variety of Brassica before? It's called Black Leaf and it's available at Dennis Edwards Flowers. It's perfect for adding texture and an intense deep purple pop to designs.
British Foliage
British Camellia with its deep green glossy leaves, and occasional bud in bloom if you're fortunate, can be found at GB Foliage.
I'm very happy to see that blossom has started to reappear at the Flower Market! Check out this homegrown Blackthorn at GB Foliage too.
Meanwhile, over at Porters Foliage, you'll find British Pussy Willow by the container load.
They always have a fantastic range of both homegrown and imported greenery from around the globe. And if you need any assistance, simply ask the staff at their sales desk.
British Plants
Bob at L Mills has got some stunning British Hellebores currently available in several different varieties.
World Plants
If you're on the look-out for on-trend hanging houseplants head to Quality Plants, where they have an extensive range including Lepismium bolivianum and Rhipsalis paradoxa. Lepismium bolivianum, on the left, is also known as Forest Cactus as it's usually found growing in the crooks of tree branches in the Bolivian forest. And the common name for Rhipsalis paradoxa, on the right, is Chain Cactus due to its 3 angle chain-like growths.
Next door at Arnott & Mason, you'll also find a collection of trailing indoor plants including Cissus Ellen Danica. Also known as Grape Ivy, this fast-growing plant is a great alternative to ivy.
That's where you'll find Aglaonema as well, also known as Chinese evergreen, with its decorative leaves in colour variations from dark green to silver, hints of pink to red.
Head to Evergreen Exterior Services if you'd looking for planted designs with the 'Wow' factor! Check out these Muscari armeniacum Siberian Tiger bulbs massed in a container.
Sundries
Whittingtons have pulled out all the stops when it comes to Valentine's Day sundries! You'll find red raffia, tissue paper, vases, ribbon, decorative boxes, candles and faux roses.
Plus they have foil balloons, feathers and pins too.
So, I hope you’ve enjoyed this edition of the In Season report and it’s given you lots of inspiration! As always, it features just some of the many floral, foliage, plant and sundry highlights at the market this month.
