New Covent Garden Market is celebrating Diwali for the first time, with a beautiful floral installation on display all this week outside the Flower Market entrance.

A colourful and vibrant floral display celebrating the Hindu festival of Diwali is now on display at the entrance to New Covent Garden Flower Market.

The beautiful installation was created by a team from Jayesh Florist, (Jayesh, Naresh and Rahul), who are long-term supporters of the Flower Market. They run a florist shop in Willesden, north-west London.

"We've been a family-run business since 1982 when my parents started trading," explains Jayesh. "We've always bought our flowers from New Covent Garden Market as we've got such great relationships with all the traders. The best part of the Flower Market is that you can always get whatever it is you're looking for."

This year sees Diwali - known as the Festival of Lights - fall on Saturday 14 November. The Hindu festival celebrates Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (an incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against Ravana, the demon king.

Jayesh explains that the centre of the display represents a religious symbol, with candles of light bookending the display. "It's a representation of good over evil and light over darkness, so it's a perfect celebration for us all at the moment."
