We spoke to Annie Harris about I.A. Harris & Son's home delivery and the company’s rich history:

We have a fantastic variety of seasonal fresh produce. At this time of year you will see Brussels sprout stalks, chestnuts and fresh cranberries and also beautiful festive superfoods, such as kalettes.

The fruit baskets and Christmas hampers are always popular at this time of year especially as they make such lovely gifts. However our main attraction is the fact that we let our home delivery customers choose their own shopping, so people don't end up with the same things being delivered every week. Also, there is no subscription.

We have over 2000 product lines, including fruit and veg, salads and freshly prepared juices; as well as vegan alternatives and dairy and dried stores. Customers choose exactly what they want, when they want. It’s all packed into a recyclable cardboard boxes and delivered with a smile to your door.

We are constantly evolving and adding new produce daily. We are incredibly interactive with our customers. We put up polls and questions on our social media asking customers what they’d like. We also go out of our way to source produce that customers have specifically asked for.

We’ve just added real Christmas trees, Christmas lights, baubles and another beautiful addition which is very special, handmade Christmas wreaths. We work with small businesses to make sure we bring customers something unique.

The business has a great history. My great grandmother opened a shop back in 1954, then my grandad joined. You could say they were one of the original supermarkets selling everything customers expect - fresh fruit and veg, they had an in-house bakery, a delicatessen and fresh flowers. And of course all the essential dried stores and household goods too.

I remember the buzz the family shop had at Christmas time. They were selling Christmas trees and they would take over the whole road, it was a very popular shop!

As time went on my dad Richard Harris and his cousin Carl Smith joined and they expanded the business into wholesale, delivering fresh produce and fine foods to top London restaurants, hotels and pub chains; schools, hospitals as well as independent shops and green grocers.

Today the business has come full circle. Lockdown means the business has evolved again and we’re back to supplying customers at home. It’s still very much a family business. Myself and Carl’s daughter Nancy Smith are regularly checking the website and adding new stock.

It makes us laugh as we text each other the same thing, “oh did you notice we sold two Christmas trees!” or, “all the Panettone has run out!”

It was actually another family member Josh Blakley who developed the fantastic online shop. We hope customers will continue to order with us after lockdown as everyone in the company has worked really hard to make this work. It is great the pubic can have access to the freshest produce sourced from the market where we are based, the famous New Covent Garden Market.
