On Wednesday 7th July we marked the end of the third year of the Sprouts Project with a celebration event at New Covent Garden Market.
We were delighted to welcome TV chef Paul Merrett and Deputy Chief of Mission for the US Embassy Richard Le Baron as special guest judges.
The celebration event brought the schools together to showcase the produce that they’ve grown during the past year and to share their experiences of the project with each other.
It was opened by Baroness Brenda Dean, Chairman Covent Garden Market Authority, and Tim Willets, Head of Curriculum, Professional, Governor and Leadership Development Services at Wandsworth Borough Council.
Each of the eight schools then took to the stage where they presented what they had learned during the project year and how they had developed further their sustainable gardens. Guests were impressed with all the children’s presenting skills, but it was perhaps the two healthy eating raps that will be most remembered.
Prizes were awarded by Paul Merrett and Richard Le Baron. Mr Le Baron awarded the prizes for Most Improved Garden, won jointly by John Burns Primary School and Linden Lodge School, and for Best Enterprise Initiative which was awarded to Chesterton Primary School.
Paul Merrett awarded the prizes for Best Approach to Healthy Eating won by Sacred Heart RC and for Best Approach to Sustainability won by St George’s Primary School.
During the morning, guest judges, including Covent Garden Tenants’ Association Chairman Gary Marshall, went round the schools’ stands judging the produce that they had grown and brought with them.
Farmer Charlie Bransden awarded first prize rosettes to the schools for Best Taste, Best Fruit, Best Vegetable and Best Salad.
