Glitter, Flowers and Floral Design at the Flower Market Christmas Preview

10/11/2011 - 09:53

Traders stayed open into the afternoon of Wednesday 2 November, as New Covent Garden Flower Market played host to over six hundred professional florists, four sensational floral demonstrators and 7 festive displays by top Flower Market Florists for the Flower Market Christmas Preview, sponsored by C Best.

The event opened with a theatrical, dramatic Christmas design demonstration by the effervescent event florist, Simon Lycett. Ever a passionate devotee of the Flower Market, Simon demonstrated here early in the morning with great panache before racing off to perform at the Spirit of Christmas at Olympia.

Next up was Chelsea Gold medallist 2011and former Interflora World Champion, David Denyer, with his warm, rich take on sumptuous Christmas floral design.  David Ragg, four times Chelsea Gold medallist, former Interflora UK Florist of the Year and the author and designer of the beautiful book 'Monograph', then treated the audience to a heavenly White Christmas of wintery white festive floristry.

Last but not least came young Joe Massie. Three times winner of the "RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year" and a bronze medallist at WorldSkills Calgary, Joe was on scintillating form, creating eight exquisite Christmas designs.

Jean-Pierre Bonello, Pasi Jokinen of Flor-Unikon, Jayne Copperwaite, Indoor Garden Design, Danny Watchorn, Stormy and Wild About staged fabulous festive installations at locations around the Flower Market, which - with a little help from the mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas carols - helped get everyone in the Christmas spirit!!

Jayne Copperwaite’s sensational ‘Winter Wonderland’ showcase of C Best’s colossal Christmas design range inspired many to buy materials from the sundries specialist and event sponsor. Visitors left inadvertently sparkling with festive glitter and laden with purchases of flowers, foliage, plants and sundries from the Flower Market’s expert wholesalers.

Dear New Covent Garden

Dear New Covent Garden Market---I have viewed the photos from the Christmas event -they are amazing -It is a shame that I was unable to stay longer !.
I do understand how hard you all work , But I wish that you would have a day for the not so well known designers to make up designs etc on the stands of the companies- Maybe you could sponser independant floral designers /florists etc .
I say this as some of the designs (which were fantastic) are not viable to make up /due to - too- much stock being used -less is more as the saying goes.
This would be most interesting for all I am sure & also create a lot of interest (especialy if you arranged it for a college visit day) for the our future students to see how to design items for the future of the trade.
I do hope that I have not upset any of you with my ideas as I am sure it would create an interesting day for all & if possible involve the students to help with the set up of the designs etc.
With warm regards
Rosie Sue Jenkins
