What is ‘Local to London’?
The South East Food Group Partnership and New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) have undertaken a three-year collaborative project to increase the volume of local prodce that is bought and sold at NCGM.
In this case ‘local’ encompasses everything in the region defined as the South East – Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
London’s wholesale markets are a vital link in the food supply chain; they facilitate a quick and efficient way of getting fresh food over what can seem like the impenetrable barrier of the M25. Hardly anything is grown or reared within this boundary so sourcing close to it will guarantee the fewest ‘food miles’ a Londoner can expect.
As well as helping develop the links between local growers and the NCGM wholeslaers, the project also aims to stimulate demand for local food from the restaurants, caterers, retailers and public institutions who already use the Market as well as new customers.
